Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn or Facebook? How to Pick the Right Platform for Your Business

You do not need to be everywhere. In fact, trying to be on every platform is one of the fastest ways to burn out and post nothing well.
The smarter move is to choose one or two platforms where your customers already spend time, do them properly, and add more later.
Three questions to ask first
- Where are my customers? Ask them. Look at where your competitors get real engagement.
- What can I make consistently? Photos, short videos, written posts and long videos each take different effort.
- What is the goal? Local customers, online sales, B2B leads and brand awareness call for different platforms.
A quick guide to the main platforms
Visual and versatile: photos, carousels, Reels and Stories. A strong fit for local businesses, products, services with visible results and lifestyle brands. Good for building a recognizable look.
TikTok
Short video with strong discovery: people often see your content without following you. It suits businesses that can show personality, process and quick tips, and it rewards creativity over polish.
The professional network. Best for B2B companies, consultants, agencies and anyone selling to businesses or professionals. Expert advice, company news and thought leadership tend to do well.
Still a major home for local communities, events, groups and reviews, and the base for running Meta ads across both Facebook and Instagram. Good for local services and community-minded businesses.
Others worth knowing
- YouTube: longer videos and tutorials that keep being found through search, plus Shorts for quick clips
- Pinterest: people use it to plan and search, so it suits home, food, weddings, fashion and DIY
- X: quick updates and conversation, useful for news and customer service
- Reddit: communities organized by topic, which works when you contribute helpfully rather than advertise
- Google Business Profile (Google My Business): not social in the usual sense, but vital for local search and reviews
Examples by business type
- Local service business (cleaner, plumber, salon): Google Business Profile, Facebook and Instagram
- Restaurant or food business: Instagram, TikTok and Google Business Profile
- Real estate: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn
- B2B or consulting: LinkedIn first, then one more platform for reach
- Health and wellness: Instagram, TikTok and Facebook
- Online shop: Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, with Meta ads when you are ready
These are starting points. Your own customers’ habits always beat a rule of thumb.
Common mistakes
- Opening an account on every platform on the same day
- Copying the same post everywhere without adapting it
- Choosing a platform because a competitor is on it, not because your customers are
- Forgetting to keep the profile, link and photo up to date
Signs a platform is not working
Give a platform at least three months of steady posting before you judge it. Then look for:
- Almost no profile visits, link clicks or messages
- Followers who never interact
- Content that feels like a chore to produce
- Customers who tell you they do not use it
If two or more of these are true, change the format, the topics or the platform, not just the posting time.
Test a new platform in 30 days
- Set up a complete profile.
- Post a small, fixed number of times a week.
- Try three formats, for example a short video, a carousel and a text post.
- At the end of the month, compare results and decide: continue, adjust or stop.
Start here
- Pick one primary platform and one secondary platform.
- Set up the profiles properly: a clear name, bio, link and photo.
- Post consistently for three months (see how often to post).
- Look at what is working, then double down or add a platform.
